Fools rush in
Added: Jan 31, 2017The only story he ever told me about the war was how their M1 would 'ping' when the clip was empty. The Japanese became wise to this and his unit knew it. When they were pinned down they would ping their rifles and the enemy would immediately rush in on them thinking they were out of ammo. They weren't.
Another comment that has stuck with me was from a time we were visiting shortly after the 9/11 attacks. He said he was talking it over with one of his neighbors, who was in the Battle of the Bulge. The two of them were ready to grab their rifles and their oxygen tanks, head over to Afghanistan, and hunt those responsible themselves. The Marines from WWII (and Marines in general) are certainly tough and proud bunch.
