Mrs. Catharine A. Van Blarcom
It is seldom a church and community are called upon to pay the last tribute of respect to the memory of one whose life has left so pleasing a remembrance as that of Mrs. Catharine A. Van Blarcom, who departed this life at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Hannah Dolson, in Newton, on Sunday, April 19, 1891, in the 78th year of her age. Mrs. Van Blarcom was the widow of William Van Blarcom, who departed this life about 37 years ago, leaving her with a family of eight children to protect and care for, to whom she was very fondly attached, and among whom she has resided during the past 24 years. She is survived by six children, Capt. Lewis Van Blarcom, one of the most prominent lawyers in Sussex County; Garret, Joseph, Andrew J., a member of the leading grocery firm in Sussex County; Susan, wife of Nelson Ackerson, and Hannah, widow of Charles Y. Dolson.
Mrs. Van Blarcom became a member of the North Hardyston Church over 50 years ago, and when she came to Newton to make it a permanent home she became a member of the Presbyterian Church of Newton. A consistent member, always in her place when able to go, and was always ready to cooperate with her pastor in every good work; but the luster of her Christian character shown best in her home. The interest she had always manifested towards her children, in whose welfare she apparently devoted her whole life, was kindly appreciated and returned, particularly so during the closing hours of her existence.
She never wearied her friends with complaint or her trials, but she bore in her life the blossoms of love, charity and usefulness. How gladly she went when the summons came, without a struggle. Her children and they who ministered to her so faithfully, will miss her, but the blessed memory of her life will ever be with them. May these thoughts make heaven more real, knowing it is well with her. And may they bear the voice from heaven saying, "Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord."
Mrs. Van Blarcom was the last member of a family of eight children, her father being Jacob Sutton and her mother Hannah Sutton, of Hardyston Township, one of the most prominent families in Sussex County over 40 years ago. Her brother, Jacob Sutton, died recently at Monroe Corner, in the 87th year of his age. Her brother, Michael R., removed to Michigan about the year 1856, and departed this life about 10 years since. He was a prominent member of the North Hardyston Church and a contemporary of Judge Daniel Haines, Deacon Congleton, Jacob Kimble, Edward Beardslee, Joshua Predmore and others, when the North Hardyston Church was the most prominent church in the county of Sussex, under the ministration of the late Dr. Fairchild and Dr. Joel Campbell. Thus by her death another landmark is gone.
