Catherine Sutton was born to Jacob and Hannah Sutton of Hardyston, NJ, She was the granddaughter of Johnathan Sutton, a sergeant in the Captain John Polheuns Company, First Regiment, New Jersey Troops in the command of Colonel William Earl Stirling, who fought at the Battle of Monmouth (June 28, 1778) among other engagements.
Like her husband, Catherine's family arrived in America 7 generations prior. George Sutton, born in England in 1610, came to Boston, Massachusetts, aboard the ship Hercules in 1634. After William's death, Catherine remained with the children in Lafayette until the war ended. She then moved to Newton, then later back to Lafayette to live with her daughter, Susan, and her family (husband Nelson Ackerson and their 2 sons).
Catherine is buried at Newton Cemetery in Newton, Sussex, NJ in a large Van Blarcom plot along with many of her children.
