William H was the sixth child born to Garret and Catherine Winters Vanderhoof. William lived at home until his marriage to Eleanor "Ellen" A Decker in 1858.
William and Ellen had seven children; Libbie, James Henry, Peter, George Lorenzo, Jane, Cornelia "Nellie", and Minnie. William married Celestia Young in 1876 and the two had one son, Peter, who was born in 1879. William and his family lived in Elmira in 1892 and moved to Southport some time before 1900.
According to census records, William worked as a farmer up until his death.
William served as a Private in Company C in the 7th New Jersey Infantry.The 7th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry was an American Civil War infantry regiment from New Jersey that served a Three year enlistment in the Union Army. It was mustered into Federal service in September 3, 1861. The regiment trained at Camp Olden in Trenton, before being sent out to join the Army of the Potomac.1 Mustered out July 17, 1865. Non-Veterans mustered out at Trenton October 7, 1864. Regiment lost during service 11 Officers and 126 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 2 Officers and 121 Enlisted men by disease. Total 260.
William is buried at Greatsinger Cemetery in East Elmira, New York.
