Abraham Whitehead
Birth: 20 Jun 1812Death: 18 May 1898
Abraham Whitehead was the third son of John and Susan, born in Hillsborough in 1812.
He married Sarah Ann Smith sometime before 1839 and they had 11 children: John L., Nelly, Jacob T., Emely, Elizabeth, Susan, Benjamin B., James S., William, Charity, and Peter G.
Abraham worked as a laborer and a farmer all of his life. In the 1840 census, he and his family are listed as living in close proximity to his father, John. In 1850, John was living with Abraham and his family presumably on John’s land, though no transfer of ownership has been found. A land ownership map produced in 1873 shows Abraham’s name on the same plot that was once his father’s.
In 1862, Abraham and his son Jacob answered the call of war and volunteered with Company F of the 30th Infantry out of Flemington, New Jersey. Abraham served nearly 2 years of service and both he and his son returned home safely and returned to laboring. The 1880 census shows Jacob’s family living near Abraham in the Sourland Mountains.
Abraham lived his remaining days in Hillsborough and was buried at Saums Burial Ground in the Sourland Mountains, which is situated very close to the land he once worked.
