Gilbert Whitehead

Gilbert was the ninth child born to Samuel and Velma and he was the eighth boy. His birth certificate notes that he was the tenth living child out of eleven children. He lived and worked on the farm in Ringoes his entire life. According to the 1940 census, he only finished school through the eighth grade.

Gilbert was the third Whitehead boy to die in a tragic auto accident. According to news articles, Gilbert was riding in the back of a pickup truck holding onto a cow that was being delivered to auction. When the truck took a curve, the cow lunged and Gilbert was thrown from the truck fracturing his skull.
Gilbert laid in St. Francis hospital in Trenton for 2 days before succumbing to his injuries. He is buried in a plot next to his parents at Highland Cemetery in Hopewell.
