Velma Valley Whitehead Miller

Birth: 2 Jun 1911
Death: 23 Nov 1974

Velma Valley was the first female born to Samuel and Velma. According to her birth certificate she was the eighth living child in the family and the tenth child born. Velma lived with the family in Ringoes until at least 1920 and only completed school until the seventh grade.

Velma married Amos Orville Miller (1910-1997), a farm laborer, and the two lived in Flemington before relocating to Raritan Township between 1935 and 1940. Through their marriage Velma and Amos had seven children: Amos O ”Doc” (1935-1956), Audrey Velma (1937-1997), Joan (1940), Lynford D (1942), Henry A (1943), Roy L (1946), and William K (1949).

Tragedy struck the family in 1956 when they lost Amos Jr, or “Doc,” to an auto accident. It has been said that Velma never quite recovered from the loss of her oldest son.

Velma passed at the age of 63 at Hunterdon Medical Center. Her husband Amos lived for 20 more years before passing in 1997. They are buried together at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Ringoes.
