Joseph Ford Sutton was the first son born to Michael Rorick Sutton and Elizabeth Forrester Sutton. He was born and raised in Sussex County, New Jersey. When the large part of his family relocated to Michigan, it seems Joseph stayed behind, living in Northern New Jersey and New York.
On April 12, 1859 Jospeh married Eliza Stors Holden, daughter of Horrace Holden and Catharine P Holden, in New York. This first marriage ended after about 4 months when Eliza passed away. On April 10, 1866 Joseph married his first wife's younger sister, Katherine Judson Holden at The Brick Church in New York City. By 1870 the couple relocated to Philadelphia where they had five sons: Horace Holden, Joseph Holden, Daniel Judson, Edward Forrester Holden, and Frederick Judson Holden. After the detah of his second wife in 1899, Joseph married third Joanna Bates who was formerly wife of his younger brother Amos (d. 1884).
Joseph was a Presbyterian Clergyman. In 1852 he graduated Rutgers College, then graduated Bachelor of Divinity in 1857, and finally graduated Marysville College in 1881 as Doctor of Divinity.In 1862 he enlisted with the 102nd New York Infantry as a Chaplain.
Joseph Ford Sutton died in 1912 and is buried at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York with his first two wives.
