Margaret Martha Vanderhoof Roe
Birth: 11 Apr 1828 · Oak Ridge, Passaic, New JerseyDeath: 29 Dec 1900 · Caton, Steuben, New York
Margaret Martha was the third child born to Garret and Catherine Winters Vanderhoof. Margaret lived at home until her marriage to Daniel Roe of New York in May of 1847.
Margaret and Daniel had ten children; Hannah C (m. David Hammond), Sarah Elizabeth (m. George Bicknell), Mary J (m. Frank Riggles), Margaret Ann "Maggie" (m. Horace Davis), William "Michael" Holmes, John Charles, Susan Melissa, Walter Arlington, Ford A, and Harlo. In 1855 the family was living in Deerpark, Orange County, New York and in 1870 Lindley in Steuben County. By 1880 they relocated to Veteran in Chemung County, New York.
Margaret and Daniel were living in one of the family's old houses, when she suddenly became very ill. John drove to Finley, about twelve miles distance, as there was no doctor in Caton then. The doctor came with him. After he examined her and talked with Daniel, it was discovered that when her children were born, she had taken arsenic in small does to relieve the pain. This had stayed in her stomach and now was poisoning her to death. He couldn't save her life, so he gave her some opiate for pain and to make her unconscious. She passed away at 4:00 am the following morning. She was 72 years of age when she passed away. Margaret died in late December 1900.
