On September 27, 1909, Nelson married Frances E Greene, daughter of Edward L Greene and Lucy L Hubbel Greene. Nelson and Frances had four children.

Nelson worked for the railroad industry, holding several positions throughout his career; railroad store worker, station agent, operator, and telegraph agent.

Nelson registered for the draft during both WWI and WWII, though there is no record of military service.

The death and burial of Nelson D Hammond, son of David Hammond, is currently not verified, though he did pass sometime after 1940.
